The singer, actress, and businesswoman Rihanna has been invited to headline the Super Bowl LVII Halftime Show happening on February 12, 2023. She says she is nervous but ‘excited.’ However, this is not the first time Rihanna receives a call from the NFL. Back in 2019, she was asked to perform at the Super Bowl, however, she turned down the offer. “I couldn’t be a sellout.” She said. “There’s things within that organization that I do not agree with at all, and I was not about to go and be of service to them in any way.” The reason was because she was supporting Colin Kaepernick on his protests. In 2016, the former 49ers quarterback kneed during the National Anthem – his goal by doing so was to bring systemic racial, police brutality and ethnic inequality closer to the minds of the American people in hopes for a more peaceful and fair society. “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color.” said Kaepernick, during an exclusive interview with the NFL Media. Turns out he opted out of his contract with the 49ers in 2017.
Since announced the one to headline the LVII Halftime Show, Rihanna posted a picture of her hand holding the NFL football, with no subtitles but a “.” Yet, getting a lot of feedback from fans. The post is pinned on her Twitter account. What came to upset a lot of people was Rihanna’s controversy. “I couldn’t dare do that. For what? Who gains from that? Not my people. I just couldn’t be a sellout. I couldn’t be an enabler. There’s things within that organization that I do not agree with at all, and I was not about to go and be of service to them in any way.” The question is: Why would she turned down the NFL before but not now? What has changed? Her acceptance of the NFL’s invitation has backfired, and people are all over Twitter dissatisfied with the singer’s decision.
With Rihanna being the face of the NFL next year, sports broadcasting can be expected to have a lot of content to work with considering the outcome from the fans upon her announcement to be the star performance. Rihanna’s last album was released in 2016, and she hasn’t had a great appearance since then. Could this partnership with the NFL spark a comeback of the singer? We shall see it in 2023.
