On April 14, 2025, I published “May 8-14, 2023: The Greatest Week of Pace Athletics’ History,” for The Pace Chronicle. The article is over 1000 words long. It contains multiple mentions of sport-specific statistics, 3 different locations, and 10+ names. For me to write this article to what I believed to be its absolute best I had to take over a year.
My first move was to rewatch the film. Just put on each of the games, sit back, and observe. Only, I had to fast. As I was beginning to do so, Pace Athletics announced its partnership with FloSports. I subsequently learned that the games would be paywalled. While the streaming has been great, I, as a college student, did not have much money for a monthly subscription. Luckily, I had a few days before the move went into effect. So for a weekend in late July, I was rewatching these livestreams back to back.
I took more than enough notes, such as how the crowd reacted, formations of both teams, and weather conditions of the games. I was watching to see how the field looked. Were they a little messy? Did it have a big team logo in the middle? For the women’s lacrosse section of my article, I dug into my own photobook. One of the lead photographs is mine from the stands as the team celebrated on the field.
I recall my interest in Pace baseball reaching its peak after their upset of Southern Connecticut. I learned it was a 7 seed over a 2 and knew that was a positive omen. From then I was like the older baseball fans at the park. I turned the stream on and watched, keeping my own score. When researching, I did it all over again, this time with a scorecard. Man, could those Setters swing a bat?
For Women’s Lacrosse, my interest began with their game vs Adelphi. I watched us battle and struggle against the Panthers in other sports, primarily basketball. So in dislike of another school, I went to that game. And they thrashed them, 15-5. My first ever attended game of Lacrosse was a victory, how about that?
Of course, however, I had to slim it down to a lot of content on just one week. After watching the games, I had to listen to them, the fans. I was writing about the aspect of being a fan. Covering the week as a fan. For my article, I won the 2025 Blue and Golden Globe Award for Best Blog Post.
In my acceptance speech, I said how long I had been editing. This article took close to 2 years to write up to what I believe are my standards. I said how I finished, then started over, kept a portion, and deleted another. For the first time in a long time, I felt like I had to be a perfectionist. These teams I am writing about hit the mountaintop. In terms of my writing, I had to be at my very best.
Finally, I felt I did. Then I pressed the publish button. A day later, I went ahead and submitted my work to the Blue and Golden Globes. And I am glad others agreed this was my best. My peers did. My professors did. The Voting Committee for the 2025 Blue and Golden Globes did. A member of the 2023 Women’s Lacrosse team agreed. Of all the congratulations, kudos, props, approving looks I got, hers was the most fulfilling. To know that a life-changing moment of hers was, in her opinion, novelized adequately was the biggest honor.
In all seriousness, I hope that article ages poorly. Not for my content, my coverage of the stats and numbers the athletes were putting up, nor my depictions of the fans’ emotions. I hope the very title ages poorly. I hope the athletics for this mighty school in Westchester, Pace University, keep seeing success, keep raising trophies, and keep getting national recognition. In fact, it may age poorly within weeks. As I write this, Pace Softball can all but write their name onto the NCAA Bracket in Sharpie. The aforementioned Women’s Lacrosse team will be back. Who knows, maybe it is 2 titles in 3 years.
My time as a student is winding down. I have witnessed so much. Thrilling wins, agonizing defeat. I witnessed 14 teams from 2021 to now reach the NCAA Tournament. I saw one win it all. I consider myself lucky to be a student-fan at this time. Everyone else who roots for the Blue and Gold should, too. While my time as a Pace student is reaching the end, the Setters have gained a lifelong, dedicated fan.
