As you may have read in my previous blog, October for the sports lover is the most wonderful time of the year. The Sports Equinox, which occurs in the final two weeks of October has returned today.
The Sports Equinox, named after the Spring and Autumnal Equinox of our seasons, comes when each of the four major sports leagues; Major League Baseball, National Hockey League, National Basketball Association, and National Football League; have at least one game playing at the same time. And that has happened, for the 31st time ever.
The last time was actually just under a year ago. October 30, 2023, was the most recent.
The NBA was founded in June of 1946, over 75 years ago. They came to be after the NFL was established in 1920, the NHL in 1917, and the MLB back in 1876. Since then have been only 30 occurrences. The first ever was on October 17, 1971. As one may have noticed, it only happens in October, it is the only month all four are in session.
Multiple things have happened to prevent the Sports Equinox from coming more often. Schedule patterns have changed, strikes have delayed and even canceled games, and playoff series have wrapped up too early. That is not the case for the stars have aligned on October 28, 2024.
In the MLB, the World Series is on. Most importantly, The Yankees are playing. World Series baseball has returned to The Bronx for the first time in 15 years. Yankee Stadium will be packed, watch parties will be aplenty, and bars will be filled with televisions tuned in. The first pitch is tonight at 8:10pm.
A half-hour before that and a train away in Manhattan, the Knicks will be tipping off. The undefeated Cleveland Cavaliers will come to Madison Square Garden. New York will hope to put a 1 in Cleveland’s Loss column. Tip-off at the World’s Most Famous Arena comes at 7:30. If you are neither a Knicks nor Cavs fan, then you can tune in to ten other games between 7 and 10 pm.
In Pittsburgh, Monday Night Football goes down. The Steelers host the New York Giants tonight. The Giants make it three New York area teams participating in this Sports Equinox. For those into hard-hitting and hard-nosed action in the NFL, ABC and ESPN have you covered starting from 8:15 tonight.
Unfortunately, neither the Rangers, Islanders, nor Devils are in action for the NHL, but for those who root for New York, no matter what, The Buffalo Sabres hit the ice vs Florida at 7:00 tonight. If you don’t root for the Sabres or Panthers, there are seven more games to choose from.
The Sports Equinox has something for everyone at primetime tonight. From the ice, to the gridiron, to the diamond, and to the court, the choice, or choices are all yours. Get a screen or two. Switch between rooms. Track it all on your devices. See a high-stakes playoff game, catch some early-season action or both. For the love of athletic feats and competition, this night will be one to remember and the Sports Equinox is something you will hope happens again, whether next week or next year.
